Fix a decking plank to the front, back (if seen) and sides of the frame. The face of this plank should fit flush with the edge of the outer panels. 14. If there’s a big drop off the deck onto the garden, you can easily add a step. Make up a framework wide enough to take two decking planks.

After you've laid out the posts, mark the height of the deck and posts on the house. The deck should be below the door threshold to keep water out of the house. Measure down the thickness of the decking plus the width of the joists and support beams. This notes the top of the posts. Mark a level line at this height along the house.

12 Fasten the intermediate stringers with 3-inch decking screws driven through the deck frame and into the rear of the stringers. 13 Attach risers to stringers with 3-inch decking screws. 14 Install 4x4 railing posts with 3-inch screws.
Measure the height of the stair from the bottom of the decking -- or top of the floor joist -- to the ground and then divide by the 7-to-8 inches (175-to- 200 mm). This will give you the number of steps you will need to make. Adjust the height until the height and steps balance out (since you can't have a half or quarter of a step).
