We just finished replacing a deck that was 5' off the ground. It was built with 4x4's Steel roof, the snow came off the roof, totaly took out the deck, and snapped the 4x4's like toothpicks.

Re: Deck posts need support There are many other problems with that deck. First of all if there is rot in some places, there is likely rot in other places. In other words the frame probably had rot and should be checked out. 2nd the posts are definitely wrong, they should BOLTED to the outside rim.

My deck has integral support and guard posts. That is, the support posts were notched for the doubled header, and then continue up to also act as the guard (railing) post. Problem is, that guard part is rotting on some posts.
