For a seamless look, build bench out of existing decking material. Build bench to fit existing deck space or use as barrier at side of low deck. Start by cutting frame from 2x4s. With circular saw, cut two long boards for frame sides and six cross pieces. Sand edges smooth. When positioning center crosspieces, leave room for center legs between them, if bench is 8 feet long. Pre-drill and screw together frame.
Backrest: An ideal slope for a backrest is about 5 degrees, maybe a bit more. Beyond 10 degrees and it will start looking and feeling like an Adirondack Chair, without the comfort so don’t bother. Wood is inherently hard and uncomfortable for sitting on over long periods of time. So these building tips will alleviate that a bit.
Sit on the bench and decide if you’d like to tilt the seat or the backrest or both to make the bench more comfortable. To make seat or back adjustments, loosen the bolts and clamp the bottoms of the seat back supports and the fronts of the seat supports. Then back out the four screws at those points.
Install bracing cut from the same 2 x material you used for the joists — 2 x 8 for this deck — between joists in the middle of the frame to support parting boards. Parting boards, also known as pattern boards, add a distinctive look and can eliminate the need to butt boards together to span the width of the deck.
Once installed, it acts as a guide for a deck frame that’s level and square. It’s a good idea to mark joist locations on the ledger and on the front-facing rim joist before installation, when you can lay the framing members side-by-side on a pair of sawhorses.
Home improvement books and TV shows always recommend laying out deck footings with batter boards and string. But I gave that up years ago. It’s faster and easier to build a layout frame from deck boards or joists. And unlike string, a frame gives you a solid guide to mark footing holes and align post bases.
How To Build A Deck - Framing The best place to start is by installing the ledger board to provide a reference for the rest of the deck. The second step will involve installing the frost footings.
When reader Sarah Schramm asked us for directions to make a tree bench, we couldn't turn her down. This comfy, stay-cool spot has room for the entire family. To build it, TOH senior technical editor Mark Powers chose a specially impregnated and thermally modified pine that's as hard and dense as an exotic hardwood, and resists decay and termites, too.
Turn the bench right side up and place the rear backrest 2 by 4 on the pencil spacer holding the ends against the seat board then screw it to the seat back braces. Once in place, remove the pencil.
