Masonite is not waterproof at all. Masonite is a type of siding. You should really use HardiPlank. HardiPlank is not expensive.....it is made of concrete so it will never rot or get water damage.
2. Brush or roll a layer of exterior primer on the flat portions of the Masonite siding and use the tip of a paintbrush to work the primer into seams and crevices.
Masonite composite hardboard has a natural moisture resistance. When you install Masonite, the area of the hardboard penetrated by a fastener can absorb moisture. Moisture causes the area around the penetration to expand.
So, before I try anything, can you wipe on a coat of poly or some other varnish to waterproof the masonite. I know it would darken it, but it would be much easier than paint, and would actually look pretty darn good.

Re: Masonite VS Tempered Hardboard Joe, as Grant so typically eloquently states Masonite is a trade mark. board comes tempered or untempered and you already stated tempered. Tempered comes in several variety depending on what your local supplier stocks.
