In some ways it would make most sense for the plywood suitable for boat building to be the only plywood with a marine grade label. Alas this is not so. Water resistance, bending ability, and appearance are all key.
Marine-grade plywood is a specially designed panel made of Douglas fir or Western Larch, according to the APA-The Engineered Wood Association. All plies may have knots, but no knotholes. All plies may have knots, but no knotholes.
Marine grade is a superior grade of plywood, and a substantially better product. Do choose carefully when selecting plywood for marine use. Although it is more expensive, marine-grade plywood, when finished appropriately, will outlast pressure-treated plywood by far.
Marine plywood. Marine plywood is manufactured from durable face and core veneers, with few defects so it performs longer in both humid and wet conditions and resists delaminating and fungal attack. Its construction is such that it can be used in environments where it is exposed to moisture for long periods.
Plywood has been a go-to material because it generally works and the price is right. There are always comparisons of plywood to particle board, but at the end of the day, both are susceptible to warping.
Composite (ie. reinforced plastic) is heavier and does not have the structural strength of plywood (ie. a wood laminate composite). The Coosa composite is foam with reinforcing and is lighter than plywood but does not have its strength.
Plywood Bulkheads vs. Composite plywood vs. composite glass. Discussion in 'Materials' started by CatBuilder, Dec 13, ... with epoxy encapsulation over composite. Just my 2 bits. ... Seems all bulkheads should be marine plywood in boats. Very hard to see how spending so many more dollars and hours for so little weight difference would be worth it.
